The Embassy of Australia is happy to collaborate with the recently formed Slavko Curuvija Foundation in their project “Cenzolovka”. The Foundation’s efforts to promote the freedom of opinion and expression must be congratulated and we are proud to play our small part in supporting these efforts.
The right to Freedom of opinion and expression as set out in Article 19 of the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, calls for the preservation of a free society in which it is proper and reasonable for people to have the freedom to disseminate ideas.
„Everyone has the right of freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers“.
An important element of this is freedom of the press which along with freedom of expression are basic tenets of liberal philosophy and of parliamentary democracy.
In Australia we believe that freedom of opinion and expression is an inalienable right – the core of any democracy being debate, discussion and criticism. We do not have to agree with each other, quite the opposite as we can all learn from diversity of opinion. We should at least respect others right to opinion and to allow different voices to be heard – even if diametrically opposed to your own views and or values.
The opinions of others can enrich our values and make us question our own attitudes. Access to the variety of voices, differences and challenges helps us grow and understand each other. It is what makes modern democracy so rich.
A free press is a symbol of a free people. The idea of new website is simply to promote this by providing a new virtual space for all those who would like their voice to be heard. I know that Serbia has a very well developed network of social media and blogs but Cenzolovka tends to be more formatted website which will guide you through different experiences worldwide, which will offer addresses on certain issues, which will connect people from different parts of the world who wish to exchange views – whether they think alike or not.
Cenzolovka should be yet another place for sharing!
