Hungary’s Szabolcs Panyi on how Pegasus surveillance has hindered his reporting

It took five months for Hungary to acknowledge publicly that it had bought the Pegasus spyware allegedly used to hack the phones of hundreds around the world. In November, Lajos Kósa, a top official from Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, acknowledged the purchase in a media interview after a parliamentary meeting; Minister of the Interior Sándor Pintér confirmed it in front of a visiting delegation from the European Parliament it later in the month.

Više od 180 novinara otkriveno je u bazi telefona određenih za potencijalnu špijunažu, zahvaljujući curenju dokumenata predatih novinarskom kolektivu Forbidden Stories i organizaciji Amnesty International. Izbor meta za nadzor pravili su klijenti izraelske firme NSO, specijalizovane za proizvodnju špijunskog softvera koji prodaje vladama širom sveta. Njen primarni proizvod, Pegasus, može da kompromituje telefon, izvuče iz njega sve podatke i aktivira mikrofon za snimanje razgovora.

The Pegasus project: What happened and how to protect yourself

More than 180 journalists were discovered in a database of phone numbers designated for potential espionage, thanks to a leak of documents given to the Forbidden Stories journalistic collective and Amnesty International. The choice of targets for surveillance was made by clients of the Israeli company NSO Group, which specialises in the production of spyware that it sells to governments around the world. Its primary product, Pegasus, can compromise a mobile phone, extract all data from it and activate the microphone to record conversations.
